# 7 Ways to Reduce Cutting Waste in Your Workshop

Offcuts add up fast. Seven field-tested habits that cut material costs by 10–20%.

## 1\. Cut the longest parts first

Large parts constrain the plan the most. Place them on stock first, then fill the remainder with shorter parts — this alone typically saves a bar or a sheet per job. Both NestingCalc calculators sort parts this way automatically (largest-first, best-fit).

## 2\. Account for kerf from the start

Every saw cut turns a few millimetres of material into dust. On a bar with 10 cuts and a 3 mm blade, that is 3 cm gone — enough to lose a part. Enter your real blade width in the kerf field and the plan stays honest.

## 3\. Order stock in the lengths you actually use

If your parts cluster around 2 m, a 6 m stock bar leaves awkward 2 m offcuts that pile up unused. Run your cut list at different stock lengths and compare the waste ratio — sometimes two shorter bars beat one long bar.

## 4\. Batch similar jobs together

Cutting one job at a time fragments your offcuts. Combine this week's parts lists into a single optimization run: more parts per plan means tighter packing and fewer new bars.

## 5\. Keep an offcut rack with labels

A labelled offcut rack turns waste into inventory. When a small part is needed, check the rack before cutting new stock — the linear cutting calculator accepts your offcut lengths as stock bars.

## 6\. Respect grain direction where it matters

For veneered or figured material, lock part rotation (the sheet calculator allows rotation per part). A perfect layout that ignores grain is rework.

## 7\. Use a cutting optimizer — it pays for itself in one job

Manual layout on the back of an envelope leaves 10–15% waste on typical jobs. A free optimizer takes two minutes and pays back the first time it saves you a sheet of plywood.
