## FAQ

Which method should I use?

Huber needs only the mid-length diameter, so it is the quickest in the field. Smalian needs both end diameters, and Newton needs all three measurements and is the most accurate of the classical formulas.

Why do the three formulas give different volumes?

On a tapering log, squaring the diameters makes the averages differ: Smalian (ends only) returns the highest estimate, Huber (middle only) the lowest, and Newton sits in between — Smalian ≥ Newton ≥ Huber.

Should I measure over or under bark?

Measure the diameter under bark where possible. If you only have the over-bark girth, deduct double the bark thickness (roughly 2–4 cm per diameter) or use a species-specific bark factor.
