Glass Price Calculator

Estimate the cost of cut-to-size glass: area, weight and price per pane or batch, with waste and polished-edge extras. Free.

Enter width, height, thickness and quantity, add your local price per square metre and optional edge-polish and waste allowance - the calculator returns area, glass weight, material cost and total cost instantly. Weight uses the float-glass standard of 2.5 kg per m2 per millimetre of thickness, so a 10 mm pane weighs 25 kg/m2. Everything recalculates as you type, and you can copy or share the result.

4 mm10 kg/m²Picture frames, cabinet inserts
6 mm15 kg/m²Table tops, shelving
8 mm20 kg/m²Doors, shower panels
10 mm25 kg/m²Table tops, partitions

Weights are for clear float glass at 2,500 kg/m3. Toughened (tempered) glass has the same weight but cannot be cut after tempering - order it cut to size.

FAQ

How do I calculate the price of a piece of glass?

Multiply width x height to get the area in m2, then multiply by your supplier's price per square metre. A 600 x 400 mm pane is 0.24 m2; at 45 per m2 that is 10.80 before edge work. Add a waste allowance of 5-10% if the pane is cut from a larger sheet, and roughly 1-3 per metre for polished edges where needed.

How much does glass weigh?

Float glass weighs 2.5 kg per square metre per millimetre of thickness. A 10 mm pane weighs 25 kg/m2, a 6 mm pane 15 kg/m2. A 600 x 400 mm pane of 6 mm glass weighs 3.6 kg - useful for handling and for checking whether a shelf can carry it.

How much extra glass should I allow for cutting?

For straightforward rectangles cut from a larger sheet, 5-10% waste is realistic; small or many pieces cut from offcuts can need 15% or more. If you nest several panes on one sheet before cutting, the waste can drop to almost zero.

Is tempered glass more expensive?

Yes - toughened (tempered) glass typically costs about 1.5-2 times clear float glass of the same thickness, and it must be cut, drilled and edged before tempering, because it shatters if you try to cut it afterwards. Annealed glass is cheaper but breaks into large sharp shards.

Is this an official quote?

No - it is an estimate for budgeting and comparing options. Actual prices vary with glass type, thickness, holes, cut-outs, delivery and labour. Use the number to sanity-check quotes from local glaziers.
