Green Log Weight Calculator

Weight of round timber at any moisture content, by species — Wood Handbook 2021 data.

Pick a species (14 verified basic-density presets including acacia, rubberwood, eucalyptus, oak and teak) or enter a custom basic density, add the log volume and moisture content, and get the batch weight in kilograms and tonnes with the oven-dry wood mass and water content broken out.

FAQ

What is basic density (Gb)?

Basic density is the oven-dry mass of wood divided by its volume when green (fresh), in kg/m³. Because the oven-dry mass never changes while the wood dries, weight at any moisture content is simply volume × Gb × (1 + MC/100). Typical values: spruce ~355, acacia mangium ~560, white oak ~600 kg/m³.

Why does freshly felled wood weigh so much more than dried wood?

Green wood can hold more water than solid wood — moisture content on the oven-dry basis often reaches 70–120% in tropical species. One cubic metre of acacia mangium at 73% MC weighs about 969 kg, but only 560 kg oven-dry: over 40% of the green weight is water.

Can moisture content be above 100%?

Yes. MC on the oven-dry basis compares water mass against dry wood mass, not against total mass, so 150% MC simply means 1.5 kg of water per kg of dry wood. Sapwood of tropical hardwoods and eucalyptus regularly exceeds 100%.
