Crown Molding Angles: 38°, 45° and 52° Spring Angle Charts
Miter and bevel settings for flat-cutting crown molding — charts for the three standard spring angles and for corners that are not 90°.
1. Spring angle, explained
The spring angle is the angle between the back of the molding and the wall when the piece is installed. Three standards cover almost everything on the market: 38° (sold as 52/38 — 52° at the wall, 38° at the ceiling), the most common big-box profile; 45° (45/45), common in modern trim; and 52°, typical of taller hi-end profiles. If you are unsure, check the wrapper — manufacturers print the spring angle on the label.
2. Nested vs flat cutting
Nested cutting lays the crown against the saw fence exactly as it sits against the wall: the miter is simply half the corner angle (45° for a 90° corner) and the bevel stays at 0. Flat-cutting — molding face down on the table — is often the only option on tall profiles, and there BOTH angles change: the saw needs a miter and a bevel computed from the spring angle. That is where the charts below save the day.
3. The flat-cut chart for 90° corners
For a true 90° corner, set your compound saw as follows:

4. Corners that are not 90°
Old houses routinely throw corners of 85–95° at you, and a 2° error is clearly visible in the joint. Measure every corner with a digital protractor instead of assuming 90°, then enter the real angle into the Miter angle calculator — it computes miter and bevel for any corner and any spring angle, including the odd ones old framing produces.
5. Field tips
Cut test pieces from scrap and check them in place before committing to good stock — saws and profiles vary. Cope inside corners instead of mitering them when possible; a cope absorbs wall movement far better. If the spring angle is not printed anywhere, measure it with a framing square against the wall and ceiling contact faces, or just try the 38° preset first — statistically it is right.
