Tile Waste Factor: How Much Extra Tile to Order (by Pattern)

1. Why order extra at all

Every layout produces waste: edge cuts, breakage, drilling mistakes, and tiles you will want for future repairs. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) estimates 2–5% breakage alone for ceramic tile in normal handling. Running out mid-job means a second delivery fee and — worse — a different dye lot that may not match what is already on the floor.

3. Large-format specifics

Large formats change the math. One broken 24×48 tile is a lot of square feet written off at once, and the small offcuts left over are too short to reuse anywhere. Obstacles — drains, outlets, door thresholds — force more cuts per square meter than an open field does. If your room mixes large tiles with many obstacles, plan closer to 20% and verify with a real layout before ordering.

4. Dye lots and spares

Shade variation is graded V1 (uniform) to V4 (strong variation) — and even within one model, color drifts between production runs. Order every box at once from the same lot number, and still keep 5–10% spare after the job: tile models get discontinued fast, and a matching spare in five years is worth far more than the storage space.

5. A simple workflow

Measure the room carefully, pick the pattern before ordering, and apply the preset waste factor for that pattern in the Tile calculator — it already knows straight, offset, diagonal, herringbone and large-format percentages. Round the result up to full boxes, and keep one unopened box stored dry for future repairs. That single box is the cheapest insurance in the renovation business.
