How Much Wood Glue Do I Need? Spread Rates, Joints and Cost
Bond-line area times spread rate in g/m²: verified adhesive consumption for edge gluing, panel lay-ups, finger joints and veneer work.
The spread-rate model
Adhesive data sheets specify consumption as a spread rate in grams per square metre of bond line, and that single number drives everything: glue kg = area (m²) × spread (g/m²) × faces × waste factor. One face of PVAc D3 runs about 175 g/m² (Jowat 103.70 quotes 175 ± 25); applying to both mating faces doubles it. Wood glue implements exactly this model, with the data-sheet presets built in and every field overridable for your own press logs.
Edge gluing: counting the joints
For edge-glued panels the bond line is the joints, and joints are countable: a 1220 mm panel glued from 40 mm lamellas has 31 lamellas and 30 joints, each one a panel-length × thickness strip. That works out to roughly 0.44 m² of bond area per square metre of panel. At an EGP spread of 200-300 g/m² the panel consumes 86-130 g/m² - about 4.8-7.3 kg of glue per cubic metre of finished panel, a number production planners can take straight to purchasing.
Face lamination and lay-ups
Face bonding multiplies by bond planes: a three-layer lay-up has two of them, so a 2440 × 1220 mm set needs glue for 5.95 m² of face area. Cross-laminated timber, door skins and bent laminations all follow the same counting rule. Wood glue has a face-lamination mode where you enter sheet size, layer count and number of lay-ups, and the faces selector covers whether you spread on one side or both.
Finger joints, veneer and the hard cases
Finger-jointing runs the highest spreads in the shop - PUR systems quote 430-630 g/m² because the profile doubles the effective surface. Phenolic films and veneer pressing sit at 150-300 g/m² per plies, rising to 180-240 when the mix carries filler. Green eucalyptus with PU runs around 210 g/m². When your case matches none of these, measure it: weigh the glue bottle before and after a shift and divide by the joints produced.
From grams to purchase orders
Glue is bought by the kilogram but stored and dosed by volume, so the last step is density: PVAc sits near 1.08 g/cm³, PU between 1.1 and 1.2. At 1.08, the 4.2 kg from a 20 m² job is 3.9 litres - one 5 kg pail with margin. Add your price per kilogram in Wood glue and every quote carries its real adhesive cost instead of a rounding error in consumables.
